The schedules have been released for the BC , and I'm excited. The closer it gets the more I have I confidence I can take down both Pick 6's on $20 worth of tickets. However, c'mon why card those last races? Friday: 4:25 p.m., $200,000 Las Palmas Handicap, (gr. II), 1 mile (Turf) Saturday: 4:25 p.m., $125,000 Oak Tree Derby (gr. II), 1 1/8 miles (Turf)
There's no good rational reason for it. An argument I've heard is that whoever lost in the big race will try and make it back, but if they lost the big race doesn't that mean they're a bad bettor? What are the chances they hit this final race? More likely they lose their huge bet in either classic then lose AGAIN in the final race. So, the taste in their mouth is doubly sour. They lost two big bets and they're talking about a useless Grade II race. If you lose on the big race, at least you leave talking about the big race, no? |

The last race isn't necessarily for gamblers.
It gives those in attendance something to do rather than sit in traffic.
It allows horsemen the chance to run on the big day. Especially on the West Coast, you can't card too many races early because then you're talking 9 or 10 a.m.
They run allowance races after the Derby. What's the big deal?
It's not a huge deal, but it's definitely not what they should be doing. In any other entertainment outlet do they do this?
In my book, I actually suggest playing the m/l favorite or the DRF consensus choice in the "Last Race of the Day".
Why?
Big race or no big race, the preponderance of players have been losing ALL DAY long, and in a last ditch effort to recoup their losses, make ridiculous bets on long shots.
Thus, long shots become underlays, and favorites can actually become overlays.
You win, the average bettors lose, and the last song THEY hear is, "Nearer, my God, to Thee".

*Plus, I haven't liked U2 since they screwed me during the Zooropa Tour. $300 to hear Bono say, "Tonight, we will only be playing our new songs."
I got hammered on the '03 BC races at OSA and cashed a nice ticket on last non-BC race to make some money back. The horse that won was called "hamburger helper" or something like that. After racking my brain on 8 consecutive BC races with 14-horse fields in each one (many of whom had incomplete PPs because they raced overseas), a vanilla G2 may be just what the doctor ordered.
Heck, I may skip the BC races and just play the Oak Tree Derby!.
when thing i have noticed is that hard core gamblers who go to the track always bet the last race-I have never seen a big bettor walk away after a stakes race win or lose and walk out the track without betting the last race-no matter how lowly the race may be.
I always thought it was for the traffic. When I went to the Breeders' Cup there were no races carded after the Classic and it took us 45 minutes to get out of the parking lot at Woodbine. Normally it's very easy to slip out of there but the entire crowd was trying to leave at once.
I'm not in favor of these "filler races" that with proper placement would strengthen the Oak Tree meet.
When Monmouth Park ran their Breeders Cup they had to "borrow" traditional stakes from The Meadowlands to put on the Breeders Cup under card.
But even more importantly, as sports fans if we gripe about 4 hour baseball games, how is it that 6+ hours at the track is acceptable?
It is not.
Shorter the cards the better.
