Higher Authority - Gone

I'm sorry to say that Higher Authority was euthanized last night after a battle with some infection after surgery for a non-displaced condylar fracture. I'm glad I met her, and I'm not giving up on ownership (she was the first real horse I felt I owned), I'm just pretty bummed out right now. I would easily trade this for a horse on a farm who can't run a lick in competition. This is horse racing I know, but it sucks when it happens to you. I feel bad to the people really involved with HA, I'm sure they feel terrible plus I'm sure they feel responsible, they shouldn't. I know HA was in good hands from the groom to the ownership structure, I met them all, I don't have any less faith in them today than yesterday. She really was a sweet filly, her nickname was peanut around the barn. Today is a low, hopefully I'll get a high in the future.

Sorry to hear about HA, Patrick. It's never easy. I've lost a few over the years, and even after owning dozens of them, each loss still hurts.

I'm so sorry to hear that. What a pretty girl. It's always hard losing a horse - they carry such a big part of our hearts with them when they go.

This is the news you fear everyday you get on-line; "Fragile" as Sting would sing. Blessings for this horse and all these magnificent creatures and the people who care for and love them. Each one weighs heavy on the heart.

I am so sorry for your pain. Have a horse put down is never easy.

You should have spent the money on a new oven.

I'm so sorry. I sometimes think about being involved as an owner someday, and this sort of thing always stops me.

Peter Vegso is my publisher, and he has been very kind to me -- had me to the farm, invited me as his guest to the Breeders Cup, etc. Very nice man and very nice family.

When his horse Go Between died he took a piece of me with him. He wasn't "mine" of course, but since I'd met him a couple of times and followed his career I kinda thought of him as "my horse."

I can't imagine how Peter Vegso felt when he got the call -- or you, either.

I'm so sorry.

Patrick my condolences for your loss. I wish people could only experience the highs in our game. You're such an outstanding individual for our sport. It's a real shame this had to happen on your first go with ownership. Every day things will get a little better and then eventually you will reach that point were you are ready and excited and full of dreams again. Hang in there.
