What is Old Is New Again - And Sucks

UPDATE THE TBA IS HOLDING A PHOTO CONTEST DO-OVER - Go to the TBA homepage for details.

You know that the pic on the left won the Eclipse award. The press release is:
here (B'horse)
here (NTRA)
Even the blogs spat out the press release
here (Moran)
here (Paulick)
here (Alicia Wincze)

The TBA homepage (all links were there) was inundated w/ this story late yesterday. The real blogs are reacting today.

You know that it's nearly identical to one that won it before (Jen's Thoroughblog). You know that there are many deserving (better) photos (Green but Game). And really what's the diff? (Curb)

And I'll tell you why this photo won:

The Breeders' Cup and the NTRA are two separate entities, but they are friendly. The NTRA runs the Eclipse. The Breeders' Cup logo appears nearly 9 times in this photo, the photo is nearly completely purple. It's appealing to the eye because green and purple are complementary, and did I mention the 9 logos.

So, if you want to win an Eclipse next year you know the rules - Logos, more logos, and maybe a horse.

UPDATE = HOW DO YOU SPELL JUVENILE? - Thanks reader DAVID

However - what is hysterical is look at the spelling of the race name on the purple BC signs -

the JUNENILE TURF

OMG, I can't imagine that was like that. Is it a photoshop error maybe. WOW

I always thought green and purple were super villain colors.

Good catch on the spelling of the JUNENILE TURF. It's a product placement ad gone wrong, disguised as an award-winning photo.

I can just hear Tessitore now - remember the way he carried on about the impending leap. He's not going to win an Eclipse too, will he?

I remember a little. I think it would be great if we all take the same photo next year and see if one of us can win. We know where the BC will be, we know he'll have a ride, and most likely win at least one race, so all that really matters is getting the head on shot.

Ugh, don't remind me about Tessitore. He made a valiant attempt at making that whole broadcast unwatchable.

Wow at the typo though, hadn't noticed that.

Its boring, though the misspelling makes it shoot right to the top.

Seriously, photos of Big Brown loosing his shoe should have won the award.

Wow! I can't believe the misspelling. That is unbelievable.

They should give this award to a photographer not a photograph.

I will never forget Tessitore going on and on and on and on about the flying leap. It's seared into the brain. Forever. And I can't stand him. And he drove me crazy that day. Worst Breeders' Cup commentary ever.

And yeah, the spelling mistake. WOW. Classic. This photo getting picked, the logo crap, the misspelling, the revelation this makes of what a joke the voting is - all this is a perfect symbol for demonstrating how much horse racing has become its own worst enemy, and ANY success must be considered to come in spite of itself.

And as usual, hats off to the TBA community and the Paulick Report for calling it like it is. LOVE the photo contest do-over - power to the people!

Erin I hope you'll submit a photo.

You've got to admit...the BC/NTRA folks are consistent boneheads.

What bugged me about the pic was that the real star of the show, the horse had it's nose wacked off. All and all, as a photographer the pic is not much on composition or impact (unless you throw in the spelling errors...multiple times btw; then, it's a hoot!)

Good suggestion about Big Brown's loose shoe. While it may distasteful for many, I thought the shot of Eight Belles on the ground hit me the hardest this year...not pretty, but very powerful.

Barabara Livingston's worse2008 photo would be better that this nonsense.

Purple and green are NOT complimentary colors, and the Breeders' Cup leech amazingly found a way to make Santa Anita ugly by hanging their purple banners all over the teal grandstand.
