Zayat Stables Generation Y

Justin Zayat is the son of Ahmed Zayat. We emailed over the past couple of days, and I think people should be confident that not all horse fanatics are in their retirement. There's plenty of us who enjoy the sport that don't qualify for the early bird special.

Handride - Your dad is the name on the stable; but how does he get the rest of the family involved? You have an interesting email address incorporating your families stable, I'm guessing that's one way.

Justin - My father is a very good communicator. He loves getting everyone involved in the entire process. He wants to develop generations who will take care of the stable that he is building. He is a passionate man, putting his heart and his money towards his goal of return racing, as he always says, "to its old majestic way." I’m only 15 and I’m getting an education in purchasing of yearlings, two year olds, and allocation of trainers, every summer I spend a month and a half working in the stables, and he copies me in all the emails he has with the trainers. Although he is expecting me to go to school, I'm hopeful my father's alma mater Harvard, he said the best education is life; the more experience I have in real life will help me a lot.

We have a portfolio of our horses and we get emails when each horse works and when they run and are entered. My dad and Sobhy have a weekly conference call with each trainer which takes a while. Bill Mott takes three hours sometimes just to go through all the horses.

What decision you think you've helped with that turned out for the best? what ideas did you have that you're happy your dad didn't follow. I'm sure at some sales all the 2yo's yearlings etc look like winners, anything slip through your fingers, or any of your picks panning out?

There is one horse I credit myself with picking out: Mushka. I told my dad, we’re not going home without her. We had to battle with Darley first, but we got her. Also there is a filly that we bought this past yearling sale at Fasig-Tipton July, she’s a Malibu Moon filly her dam’s name is Try Your Best. I think she is going to be a very very special filly. She’s is the oaks winner for 09. I also was the one that recommended Steve Assmussen to my dad, which turned out to be great for us! My dad is always listening to what people need to say he never ignores a person’s opinion.

Mushka's getting a lot of attention, how did you single her out, who taught you?

She’s a very special filly. I learned a lot from my dad, Sobhy Sonbol and Bill Mott. I was walking around at the sale looking at all the freshman sires at the time, and I saw this beautiful filly from far so I went up close to see her and I loved her. I knew she was by Empire Maker and after I brought my dad and Sobhy to look at her they both loved her. She is a big beautiful filly, we got the vet to look over her and she passed for us.

Mushka - any day dreams she follows in Rags to Riches steps and goes for the Belmont ? I mean Empire Maker, Seeking the Gold, Seattle Slew, are all in her pedigree tracing back to foundation mare Comely Nell, 1 1/2 shouldn't be a problem, she could probably run from AQU to Belmont and still whip most horses.

Mushka is a maybe for the triple crown trail, we are hoping she is the next Rags to Riches, her move in the Demoiselle was eye popping. But I think the Zayat horse for the Derby would be Alaazo, you should watch his maiden race he is a really good one. Mushka could go there but I would want her to run in the Oaks cause she is much tougher than the other fillies I’ve seen. I like Zayat Stable’s chances for pulling a double Derby weekend for sure.

Who is your favorite horse so far, not necessarily the biggest winners, just the ones you like?

My favorite horse is probably JZ warrior. I was with her on the farm before she went to Bill. She grew so much; I fell in love with her.

Understanding you are under the age to bet on your horses, any good stories there?

When the Belmont meet starts I normally go to watch them train every Sunday morning and me and my dad stay to watch the races. Even though I’m underage I still bet with my dad when we go to the tracks. I’ve had some good days, but my dad should take credit for teaching me everything I know. One good day was at Saratoga this year at the end of the meet, we won three races in a day, I was there.

Justin was also kind enough to pass on the Zayat horse update:

Throbbin Heart didn't like the weather in Florida. She is going to Aqueduct and the run in the Dearly Precious stakes. Alaazo is going to run in an allowance race or the Sam Davis. Riley Tucker will follow the same path as Alaazo. Final prep will be the Bluegrass if they are sound and can get to the Derby. Riley will probably have two races before that. All our California colts we are playing day by day as we monitor the Santa Anita situation. Eaton’s Gift is going to the Swale, Halo Najib(30) might head to the Bob Lewis stakes in SA, Z Fortune(15) in the Risen Star.

Thank to everyone reading this, I'd be doing my group a disservice if I didn't mention them; please check out the group I'm a part of, the TBA, we have a group RSS feed that is a must read. Headlines or feed.

After reading the grammar used in all of this so called 15yr olds responses, it is quite clear and obvious Zayat has someone responding to their solicited emails!

Hilarious.

I "solicited" him directly, so I can assure you it was him. An email went back and forth about 12 times, and you are correct in assuming the grammar and punctuation on both of our parts were poor. After my questions were done we worked to put the interview together in a language people over 38 would understand and not look down upon.

I teach high school and I was thinking that he sounded fairly mature and precocious.

Great stuff--really fun to read, particularly as I had Mushka in the Demoiselle and am a huge fan.

Mr. Anonymous,
Its really sad that everything is so suspicious in our industry that a simple comment by a 15 year old who happen to be my son is being judged and skewed the way you have commented on it instead of we encouraging our second generations to be involved and understand the beauty of racing and those beautiful athletes and be involved in interactive intellectual discussions about horse racing we discourage them with this nonsense. I can assure you that the host of this blog have contacted my son Justin over facebook and asked to share his views about zayat stables . my son Justin took my permission to divulge private information about our stable. i gave him permission to be interactive open and transparent about our horses. i can also assure the readers that Justin answered all and ever questions on his own and i was very impressed and proud of his polished answers. Way to go Justy.

I am so proud of my brother, Justin. Ever since he's involved himself in the family business, he has been nothing but a help. Justin sounds incredibly polished and professional in this interview. He is able to hold an intelligent conversation about our stable because it is something he loves. Generally, people are well versed in matters they invest time, money, and passion into. Anyone who knows Justin is aware of his way with words and love for horses. So "Mr. Anonymous", take your disparagements somewhere else.

Yeaaaahh Homeboy!@#$%^&

I guess we now know where Point Ashley got her name. Thanks for reading the blog.

Dear anonymous, it is clear, from your decision to sign in as anonymous and your lack of a reply to the subsequent posts, that we should not spend any more time on your wasteful comments.

So moving on...I wholeheartedly congratulate the success of the Zayat Stable and am delighted their hard work and enthusiasm is paying off.

Looking forward to watching their horses on the Derby trail this year.

It's worth pointing out that both Justin and Bill Mott's son, Riley, are active participants in several of the horse racing groups on Facebook. Riley is equally interested, knowledgeable and as engaged as Justin and they both bring a lot of good stuff to the discussion... and more than half of the time they create the discussions.

Children don't always take such an interest in their parents' business. I think it's not only pretty encouraging but great to see kids of this age so actively interested in the sport, and as Teresa pointed out, precocious.

On another note, I love Mushka, she was something else in the Demoiselle. She's the first 3yo that I've "officially" fallen in love with. I actually had posted a note about how it would be nice to see her on the derby trail on one of Justin's pictures of her and he promptly replied... see, engaged.

My name is Sobhy Sonbol and I manage Zayat Stables horses. I am very pleased to see the huge interest in the blog and the comments of support. As for Anonymous' comment i have to say that Justin is not only good at writing coherent and proper answer which is what any well educated bright 15 years should be able to do but he is a great help and addition to Zayat Stables. He is very active and eager to be involved in everything in the stable from racing to breeding. He is also very capable of picking up condition books and recommending races for our horses.
Justin and Riley really fuel the facebook kentucky derby facebook group.
Passion fuels our industry and unfortunately our tracks lack it and the fan base is diminishing so its always refreshing when the future generations of the sport like Justin Zayat and Riley Mott are as passionate as they.

Thank you guys for your nice comment!! I'd like to point out that Riley Mott is also extremely involved in the game, he works for his dad every summer and attends all the races. I speak to him everyday about what is happening in the racing world and in our stables. He will be the next Bill Mott no doubt!

To anonymous,
I too am proud of Justin. This interview was 100% not a fake. Don't be ignorant just because you do not even know half as much about horse racing then Justin does and stop being such a hater on the Zayat dynasty

Exceptional interview. Both you and Justin are to be commended for putting together a very interesting article. It's fabulous to see Justin so involved and excited - and to have such incredible family support as well.

Great Interview. It's finally refreshing to have someone talk about the horses and what they are pointing to, rather than the great mystery we always get from some owners. I like the names of the horses, and Mushka's performance last fall was truly something special. Also thank you for shipping and moving these horses around and ship them to some races. Would love to see Halo Najib in the Beverly Lewis.

Does anyone in here know what the near future holds for Alaazo after his win at Gulfstream on Monday? How soon can we expect to see him again? And where?

Justin Zayat said...

We have a few options for alaazo either the Lousiana Derby, Sham or Lanes End

I know that this message is probably posted too late but please can anyone give us an update on Maimonides?- He was my bright and shining star for Vindication and I feel sorry for his apparent bad luck of injuries. Now that Vindication is gone I hope one of his colts can carry on the Seattle Slew legacy. AND I LOVE ZAYAT STABLES AND ALL CONNECTIONS- PEOPLE LIKE YOU WILL MAKE THE SPORT OF KINGS EVEN BETTER! GOD BLESS! (this may show up as "Anonymous"- please do not confuse me with the rude anonymous who posted prior to me)
